IPAA invites you to a valedictory address by Peter Varghese AO, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Mr Varghese will step down as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 1 July 2016. As part of his valedictory address, Mr Varghese will reflect on the profession of public service after thirty-eight years in the APS.

Mr Varghese took up his position as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 3 December 2012. Prior to this appointment Mr Varghese held numerous senior positions within the Australian Government, including Australia’s High Commissioner to India from 2009 to 2012, Director-General of the Office of National Assessments between 2004 and 2009, and Senior Adviser (International) to the Prime Minister. 

Mr Varghese was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010 for distinguished service to public administration, particularly in leading reform in the Australian intelligence community and as an adviser in the areas of foreign policy and international security. Mr Varghese will take up the position of Chancellor of the University of Queensland in July 2016.
