Public Policy Lessons from the Global Financial Crisis

As Australia continues to track through its current major economic challenge, join IPAA to hear observations on the global financial crisis (GFC) from a panel of economic experts.

The 10-year anniversary of the global financial crisis (GFC) sparked widespread reflection in public policy circles: why did it occur, how effectively did authorities respond, and what lessons could be learnt for future crises, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic?

In Australia, this discussion largely occurred in the media and through public addresses, rather than through any formal assessment by senior policy officials. Limited reflection was therefore given to the challenges the crisis posed to key public policy agencies.

The event’s discussion will centre around papers recently authored by panellists Dr Ken Henry AC, former Secretary of The Treasury, reflecting on lessons for fiscal policymakers; Dr Malcolm Edey, former Assistant Governor (Economic) of the Reserve Bank of Australia, reflecting on lessons for central bankers; and David Tune AO PSM, former Associate Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and former Secretary of the Department of Finance, reflecting on lessons for leaders’ departments, co-authored by Megan Edwards.

Meghan Quinn PSM, Deputy Secretary of the Markets Group at The Treasury will also join this panel discussion, bringing her valuable current experience working through the pandemic alongside Dr Steven Kennedy PSM, Secretary of The Treasury who will be chairing the event.

Dr David Gruen, Australian Statistician, will provide an opening summary on the work.

While the papers were written prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the lessons discussed present interesting parallels for policymakers confronting today’s economic challenges. Papers will be sent to attendees under embargo, prior to the event.
