Here to build connections: Meet Future Leaders Committee member Hend Rifai

In this special Q&A series, we introduce the members of the Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) ACT Future Leaders Committee (FLC) who work closely with us to deliver a series of events throughout the year.

Today we hear from Hend Rifai, assistant director of the Governance, Planning and Reporting team at the Department of Finance about expanding her networks through the committee, and her dedication to driving the APS reform agenda.
 

What is your role in the public service and what do you enjoy most about it?

I am the assistant director of the Governance, Planning and Reporting team. I am responsible for leading and delivering the Department of Finance’s primary planning and reporting products including the corporate plan, portfolio budget statements, and annual report. I am also responsible for providing secretariat services to the Major Projects Committee and Executive Board. I enjoy the integrated business planning component, and the opportunity to develop and improve the department’s education and maturity in this space. Sitting on the Major Projects Committee is also very interesting and exposes me to many exciting initiatives happening across finance. From a social aspect, I love building relationships with my colleagues, sharing my culture, and getting to know my staff better.

What is your role on the committee?

My current role on the committee is attending meetings and contributing ideas in relation to upcoming events and potential keynote speakers.

Why did you join the committee?

I joined the committee because I am interested in expanding my networks and getting together with like-minded people. I also value the work IPAA ACT contributes to. I am particularly interested in and joined the committee with the hope to contribute to:

• driving the current and future APS reform agenda and creating a contemporary public service
• engaging and being part of finding solutions that promote excellence and pride across the APS and
• developing meaningful outcomes that contribute to a strong sense of purpose.

What does great leadership look like to you?  

Great leadership means being the custodian of stewardship. It means being a committee for public interests, working together in partnership, looking ahead to the future, and encouraging those around you to contribute and get involved.

If you have participated, can you tell us your three key takeaways from when you attended the Future Leaders Program?

I have only attended one meeting thus far so my realisation of the benefits is still premature. However, key takeaways include: 

• IPAA ACT has a big year ahead of events and planning
• Cross-collaboration and voicing your ideas are appreciated
• Your contribution no matter how big or small is valued and will make a difference.
