Work with Purpose - Global Perspectives | 7 September 2020

Welcome to the first episode of our special podcast series, ‘Work with Purpose – Global Perspectives’. This program explores the incredible work Australian public servants do around the world to deliver not just for Australians, but for the people of other countries.

IPAA’s National President, Dr Gordon de Brouwer PSM, is joined by Bernadette Welch PSM, who has held numerous roles across the Australian Public Service, including Head of Operations for Australia’s G20 Presidency in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and until recently, was the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, Government of Fiji.

Fiji is made up of over 300 islands, of which 130 are populated, so there are unique challenges when it comes to providing health and medical services. Discussed in this episode:

  • The emergence of the pandemic and Fiji’s quick response.
  • The implementation of Fiji’s COVID-19 Taskforce.
  • Building community trust with effective communication.
  • Working with the World Health Organisation.
  • The importance of good working relationships across public, private and academic sectors.
  • The continuity of delivering services while dealing with a global pandemic.
